How To Open Doors with Just A Smile!

I'm starting to plow through the demo CD's I've been getting. The first I've got to share with you is the debut from New York based Lipstik pleasantly entitled Everything is Good. Upon reading the title, I was reminded of the fictional Simpsons band 'Hooray for Everything,' but that says way more about me than them. This album carries the familiar New Yorker feeling of misplaced identity and a need for a place in the world, but has a fresh way of expression. The obvious Tom Petty influences are always a plus, and I love the extreme bitterness of The Fuck Off. Plus, the ambition of undertaking an Eagles cover on a debut is something to be admired. Take a listen, drop 'em a line.

Well, although I've been the worst blogger in the history of the world as of late, I felt the need to celebrate. Lost On Purpose is one year old today! Awwww, it's still one cute baby, I know. Still unsure if I have anyone still out there, but dammit, I'll still celebrate. *throws confetti in the air*

Those who know me know I'm very much in love with Ted Leo. Age difference, schmage difference. I saw him open for Death Cab for Cutie last month and was extremely close to kidnapping him and keeping him in my house against his will. If you're not convinced after listening to Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone, I will be at a complete loss. Plus, The Anointed One may be a possible Buffy the Vampire Slayer reference. Maybe I'm just a nerd.

Canadian punk cuties the Flatliners have to be the most adorable guys to ever play their genre (call it what you may) of music. I attended a performance of theirs in the dirtiest, grittiest tiniest basement for a punk show ever and had a fantastic time, minus the claustrophobia. OK, say what you will, but I love the All American Rejects. They're very catchy and it's my blog so I can post whatever I want. I also admit to having a teenage girl crush on Tyson Ritter. Anyways, I caught their show in London on Thursday night with opening acts Damone from Boston (Noelle on lead vocals sure can scream) and the surprisingly good semi-local alt-rockers illScarlett from Missasauga. Despite a few unexplainable 14-year-olds in need of Ritalin, there was good energy all the way through, although I would have liked the sets to be longer. But I got Tyson to sign my CD, so all was worth it.

P.S. I lament the recent remaks by one lyrical genius, the recently married Rivers Cuomo proclaiming that as of now, one of my favourite bands, Weezer, is "done." However, we all recall the band's last hiatus follwing the end of the Pinkerton tour in 1997 and lasting until the release of the Green Album in 2001. So fear not people, all hope is not lost, if there is any justice.

Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life for Me...

I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest yesterday (and still managed to get in free although it sold out all night) and I just have to say, even if you're not a scary Johnny Depp obsessive like myself, everyone will love this movie. Although not quite on par with the first, the action is amped up, the stakes are a great deal higher and the story has a much more sinister undertone. Look forward to the fantastic Johnny/Orlando Bloom/Jack Davenport sword fight. I won't reveal the ending, but I just have to say, I was blown away. I'm no movie critic, but if you saw the first one, POTC:2 is worth checking out.

I vaguely remember someone asking for some Gogol and if not, I've finally cracked and you get some anyway. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical of Gogol Bordello at first, but he grew on me and now this is one of my most played albums. I personally love when different genres fuse together and this mixes traces of latin, punk and reggae, with Eugene Hutz's fantastic voice and a lot of accordion. You won't find gypsy punk anywhere else. Highlights include 60 Revolutions, Start Wearing Purple and Mishto!

Once upon a Thursday, a girl was doing her bi-weekly hunt through the local music store, searching for all that's new and not crappy, a difficult task this was. Upon reaching the M section, the girl came across a discovery, there was a copy of The Moon and Antarctica for a very, very low price indeed. Having only a burned copy of this album before, this made the girl very happy. She then immediately purchased the album for the very, very low price indeed and all was well in the kingdom.
